Iran's Raisi Condemns Israel, Hamas Mourns His Death

Analysis: Raisi's Death Is a Blow for Iran Regime, but Its Proxy War Against Israel Is Far From Over

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, 63, a hard-line religious cleric, has died. His death is a blow to Iran's regime, but its proxy war against Israel is far from over.

Raisi, who was widely seen as a protégé and trusted confidant of Iran's supreme leader, 85-year-old Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was elected president in 2021.

In his address to the United Nations General Assembly last month, Raisi condemned Israel's occupation of the Palestinian territories and called for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The Palestinian Islamist group Hamas mourned Raisi's death on Monday, saying that he was a "great supporter of the Palestinian people and their just cause."

Raisi's death is a significant blow to Iran's regime, but it is unlikely to lead to a change in Iran's policy towards Israel. Iran has been supporting Hamas and other Palestinian militant groups for decades, and it is likely to continue to do so.

The tiniest attack by Israel would bring a massive and harsh response Irans president has warned.
